This is personal...AND political.
In September, I will walk over 39 miles in two days to raise money to end breast cancer and celebrate how far I've come in the last 18 months. But it's not that simple. Walking is also about raising awareness, talking about who has access to healthcare, who has access to GOOD healthcare, how important it is to support medical research (beyond the private sector and personal fundraising), how important basic services like mammograms are, and how important it is to have a support system.
I have benefited personally from great health care and medical research and support from friends and family. So, I also walk to thank everyone who has helped me along the way.
I was diagnosed with stage 4 HER2 positive breast cancer in February 2016. I successfully completed the trifecta--chemo, surgery, radiation--and now am considered NED (no evaluable disease). But cancer is never over...I still have one drug (Herceptin) infused every 3 weeks and have to take an estrogen blocker orally for the unforeseeable future. I have written about my own journey here: https://medium.com/@HER2.
From now until AVON 39 weekend on September 9-10, I’ll train to strengthen my body and raise funds. This is where you come in.
I've already raised my minimum of $1800, but I plan to raise much, much more! I hope that I can count on your support!
You can make a donation right here on my webpage by clicking the "Donate Now" button to the right. If you prefer to write a check, click the “Donate By Mail” button and follow the instructions on the form.
Your donations will be managed and disbursed by the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade. The dollars you pledge will put food on the table of a breast cancer patient and her family. They will enable access to mammograms and medicine, fuel research, and save lives. Need any more reason to click that Donate Now button?
Last year, I walked the last 5 miles with a group of high school friends (Westlake Class of '86) who walked in my honor. They raised over $30,000!! I'll be walking with some of them again this year along with thousands of other 39ers. We see a world without breast cancer for our mothers, daughters, and nieces. AVON 39 is a force of change that can’t be stopped. By supporting me with a donation, you’re part of it.
