On May 5-6, 2018 I will be walking 39.3 miles in the Avon 39 Walk to End Breast Cancer for the SEVENTH time. Yet again, I will be walking as part of Team Joyce the fierce, determined, inspiring and (let's be honest) nerdy and goofy men and women who will be putting commitment before comfort and tenacity before tendons for the TWELFTH time.
TWELVE is a meaningful number for me, personally, as well. This year will mark the 12 year anniversary of my mother's death from breast cancer. Since she died in 2005, I have been saddened by how many of my friends and colleagues have been diagnosed. Because of their circumstances, most of the women I know have access to the kind of medical care that supports early diagnosis and tailored treatment plans. Not all are so fortunate. But that means that I walk with my team members Joyce, Elly, and Deborah and in honor of Laura, Margie, Mimi, Diane, Rachel - and I don't have to walk in memory of them.
2016 was a hard year for me and Avon 39. I couldn't walk with my team in San Francisco and I was walking through persistent foot pain that also limited my training. Now my foot has been surgically repaired and I am more than ready to get back out there. After all, my lonely walk and constant pain are nothing compared to what breast cancer patients and their families go through. So I will walk again in 2018, and remember how lucky I am!
If you choose to donate to my Avon 39, I promise to walk with you and your loved ones on my mind as well. For 6 Avon Walks and counting, I have been grateful for, and humbled by, the support I receive from friends, family and sometimes even strangers. You are not donating to me, but to:
- the young girl who hopes that there is a cure by the time she is diagnosed
- the family member who receives food for his children as he tries to navigate his loved one's treatment schedule, and
- the doctors and nurses bringing diagnostic equipment – like mammovans – to lower income neighborhoods in our community
I am required to raise at least $1,800 to EARN MY 39, but I hope to raise much, much more! I know I can count on your support!
